๐ก Quick answer: Every Amazon FBA sale pays two main fees: a referral fee (usually 15% of the sale price, ranging 8% to 45% by category, with a $0.30 minimum) and a fulfillment fee (about $3 to $7 or more per unit by size and weight, plus a 3.5% fuel surcharge in 2026). Add your product cost, shipping into Amazon, and ad spend, and what is left is your real profit. On a $25 product that costs you $6, you might net around $8 to $9 after everything.
Why FBA fees catch sellers off guard
The math looks simple at a glance. You sell for $25, the product costs you $6, so that is $19 profit, right? Not close. Amazon takes a referral fee and a fulfillment fee on every unit, and then your inbound shipping and ad spend come out on top. That $19 quietly becomes $8 or $9, and if you priced too low or picked a heavy product, it can become nothing. Plenty of sellers order an entire batch of inventory that loses money because they ran the easy math instead of the real math.
The referral fee
The referral fee is Amazon's commission on each sale, taken as a percentage of the total price. Most categories are 15%. Some are lower, some are much higher, and there is a $0.30 minimum per item.
| Category | Referral fee |
|---|---|
| Most categories (home, kitchen, toys, sports) | 15% |
| Electronics | 8% |
| Beauty & personal care | 8% to 15% |
| Clothing & apparel | 17% |
| Jewelry | 20% |
| Amazon device accessories | 45% |
The fulfillment fee
The fulfillment fee covers Amazon picking, packing, and shipping your unit. It is based on the product's size tier and weight, not its price, and in 2026 it also carries a 3.5% fuel and inflation surcharge. Rough ranges:
| Size tier | Rough fulfillment fee |
|---|---|
| Small standard (under 1 lb) | about $3.00 to $4.50 |
| Large standard (1 to 3 lb) | about $5.00 to $7.00 |
| Large bulky | about $11.00 and up |
| Extra-large / oversize | about $15.00 and up |
These are estimates. Amazon's exact fee depends on precise dimensions and weight, so always confirm the number for your specific product before you commit to an order.
Storage and other fees
Beyond the per-sale fees, FBA charges monthly storage by cubic foot (higher in the fourth quarter), long-term storage on inventory that sits too long, and fees on returns and removals. For a fast-moving product these are small. For a slow seller, storage quietly eats the margin.
How to calculate your real profit
Your true profit per unit is the sale price minus everything Amazon and you spend to sell it:
Profit = sale price โ referral fee โ fulfillment fee โ product cost โ inbound shipping โ ad spend
From there, three numbers tell you whether the product is worth it. Margin is profit divided by the sale price. ROI is profit divided by your product cost, which shows how hard your money is working. And your break-even price is the lowest you can sell for without losing money, which matters when you plan a promotion or a price drop.
A worked example
Take the product in the preview above: a $24.99 item that costs you $6, in a 15% category, small-standard size. The referral fee is $3.75, the fulfillment fee with the surcharge is about $4.04, and with $0.50 inbound shipping and $2.00 in ads, your total cost per unit is $16.28. That leaves $8.71 in profit, a 34.8% margin and 145% ROI. Healthy. Drop the price to $18, or pick a product twice the weight, and that margin can vanish, which is exactly why you run the numbers before you order.
This guide explains the fees. It does not do your math.
